Microfinance in emergency situations

What role can microfinance play in emergency situations after natural disasters as well as after man-made disasters? Can microfinance play a role after natural disasters such as the tsunami that hit Asia in December 2004? Or after the kinds of earthquakes and typhoons that frequently hit some areas? Likewise, can microfinance play a role in countries that are burdened by conflict or that are in the process of rehabilitation after a severe conflict? If yes, what kind of role can microfinance play? What is good for the clients and the microfinance institutions? What are good practices? What ‘do’s and don’ts’ apply? These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important and relevant for MicroNed members and their partners. Particularly because more and more actors have become active within the sector. MicroNed and it’s members consider microfinance in emergency situations as a potential frontier in which to develop further professionalism together with its partners.
