Dutch network discusses Kampala principles on agrifinance
Friday 2 September 2011
Micro-Ned and AgriProFocus on Tuesday August 30 have discussed the Kampala Principles for agricultural finance. The expressed views of the Dutch stakeholders will be used by the German Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in preparation of a follow up conference on agricultural finance in Addis Ababa on 1-3 November 2011. GIZ will also give feedback to the G20 Summit on Sustainable Development Policy and Practice in Cannes, in November 2011.
Micro-Ned, the Dutch network for grant funders in microfinance and AgriProFocus, the Dutch network for organizations working with farmer producers in the south, welcome the Kampala Principles as a good initiative though very broadly and generally formulated. In general the need for an effective action agenda was stressed.
The Kampala Principles were adopted at the Making Finance Work for Africa (MFW4A) conference ‘Zipping Finance and Farming in Africa' in Kampala Uganda, 29-30 June 2011. The conference recognised that agricultural finance needs special attention, as the financial services needs of agriculture sectors in Africa are pressing. The 11 Kampala Principles on Agricultural Finance suggests the actions most urgently required for fostering the effective provision of financial services to the agricultural sector in Africa.
